Two common types of lighting controls are....
UPB and Z-WAVE
controls are sent throughout the home or business by means of Power Line Carrier sent on the same wires that the electricity uses.
controls the lights and other devices by the security alarm control panel. It uses radio signals in the form of a mesh network.
Lets start out with the UPB concept.
First, you replace an existing light switch with a UPB switch.
This gives you various dimmer functions.
Top button once = dim up to last state
Bottom button once = dim down to 0%
Top button twice = 100% fast
Bottom button twice = 0% fast
Hold top button = dim up till you release
Hold bottom = dim down till you release
Now replace a different switch with a UPB two button controller.
This allows you to control and dim both lights at one location without running any additional wires.
It's like a virtual 3 way dimmer where the second rocker switch controls the first light.
existing light switches
can be replaced using UPB dimmers.
Then it's possible to program the second rocker to control a "scene".
Light Y goes to 50%
Light X goes to 90%
Light Z goes to 20%
Additional "Scene" controllers can be added too. See some of the possibilities.
Let's look at the Z-WAVE concept.
switches are controlled through an alarm system.
This alarm control forms the basis of integrated control with Z-Wave.
The control panel can control z-wave lights, outlets, locks and energy management devices, all with radio waves.
